  2010 Kickoff Classic A Success

V8 Wins Several Championship at Okie and Hunt County
June has been a busy month for the V8 Ranch show crew with trips to Idabel, Oklahoma and Greenville, Texas for the last two ABBA Approved Shows of the spring circuit. Lucky for us, the ranch just got a new (used) truck so we're rolling in style! Miss V8 954/6 added two more grand champions to her credit by winning Champion Gray Female at both the Okie Extravaganza and Hunt County Shows. Mr. V8 675/6 also added two more wins to his belt, Grand Champion Bull at Hunt County and Reserve Grand Champion at the Okie Extravaganza. In addition to these, we exhibited many class winners and division champions.

We also congratulate several of our customers who have been successful at these two shows as well: Mark & Tammy Smith, Lauren Whitlock, Lauren Parker, Carly Prim, and James & Kim Allen have all won with their V8 cattle purchased from us.

Allan Browarny Visits the Ranch for Brahman Photo Shoot
In May 2010, we were honored with a visit from the world-renowned cattle photographer, Allan Browarny of Canada. Allan's father, Walt Browarny, is a pioneer in cattle photography, and Allan has taken his father's passion and expanded it into the Show Champions photography business. After photographing the Brahman cattle at the Houston show, Allan developed an interest in this noble breed and came to Texas for a special photo shoot taking both photos and videos of what he called "the most magestic breed of cattle" he has ever seen.  On his trip, he photographed many of our donors, and these new photos can be seen on our Donors page. Watch for more of Allan's breathtaking photos in our advertising program!

  Houston 2010 Snapshots
We had a wonderful week at the Houston Livestock Show this year, where we enjoyed seeing many of our old Brahman friends and meeting some new ones! Here are a few snapshots from the event.

big Day in Houston!
Brandon Cutrer and Rachel Williams were engaged during this year's Houston Livestock show back at the stalls, thanks to the scheming and planning of all the men on the V8 crew!

v8 organization
Catherine Neumayr was in charge of handing out the brackets for the white boards on the day of set up. After seeing this un-organization, she promised by next year's Houston, she would have a much better system of organization rather than the previous one used by V8, which was throwing all the brackets in an old bucket.

Colombian friends
Luann Williams enjoyed showing around these friends and outstanding Brahman cattleman from Colombia, who visited the ranch after Houston.

king of the curry comb

Congratulations Tom!

The brains behind setup
Joe, Gene "Paw" Johnston, and Frank are the real brains behind the show stall setup at Houston. We couldn't do it without them!

What's so funny?
Larry Fisher and Jeff Richard make things fun at the stalls with their great sense of humor and friendliness. Obviously they're joking about something...maybe singing Cattle Call on those early mornings in the barn.

Monday Fun day
Luke Neumayr and Adrian Land worked on getting the fan stands set up on what seemed like one of the longest days of the show...Monday's set up day.

Matt's bull

Brasilian friends
Matt Karisch and Jim Williams enjoyed catching up with Jacques of Brahman Real, one of our clients and a top Brahman breeder from Brasil.

Thailand Friends
Matt Karisch provided a tour of the V8 showbarn to the Thailand delegation after the show, where he explained the daily operations of our show cattle operation and described the V8 showstring.

Jeff Richard and Brandon Cutrer enjoy a visit learning from Portfilio, the herdsman of J.D. Hudgins.

Jerky Anyone?
Rachel Williams catches up with the Onheisers of Schulenberg, makers of the Oma's Choice Beef Jerky, the best beef jerky around! For more on this product, visit www.omaschoice.com.

A few shots from the booth
Visitors at the V8 booth enjoyed our delicious cookies and a great place to relax and visit.

The trenches
Everyone loves our white backboards at the stalls, but they take a lot of work to set up. We dug enough trenches to cover the length of 1.5 football fields on Monday!

But it's all worth it!
But, when all the digging and wiring is done, it's all worth it when you see a beautiful showstring like this all bedded down in the stalls!

Thailand Friends
Jim and Luann Williams pictured here with the Thailand delegation on a ranch visit. We appreciate this group of breeders taking the time to come to the ranch after the show and see our cow herd and herd bulls.

Customer Success at houston 2010 - We love it when our customers win!
Customers of V8 Ranch had a banner day at the 2010 International Brahman Show in Houston...and this what we love! Nothing makes us more excited than when we see fellow breeders winning championships with the cattle they have purchased from us. Congratulations to these two breeders, and also to the many other breeders who's cattle have a V8 genetic influence.

We are continued to be excited about the calf reports and progeny by Mr. V8 380/6. His first offspring shown are proving him in the showring. Here is another example of a heifer from his first calf crop...Miss V8 143/7, who is owned by Tanner Lee Schwartz of Brenham, Texas, and was recently named a class winner in the 2010 San Antonio Junior Brahman Heifer Show. Congratulations to Tanner, and continue to watch for this and other exciting 380 progeny in Houston.

Fort Worth success for V8 ranch and customers

Miss V8 100/7 and Miss V8 23/7 were both selected as Reserve Division Champions. Mr. V8 675/6 repeated his winning ways as Junior Champion Bull, followed by Mr. V8 620/6 as Reserve Junior Champion Bull.   V8 bulls named trait leaders in Spring abba sire summary
Several V8 sires were recently named trait leaders in the ABBA's spring 2010 EPD update, which is available at www.brahman.org. Current bulls in our sire lineup being named as trait leaders include Mr. V8 960/5, who was named a trait leader for weaning weight and yearling weight. Mr. V8 730/5 "Tomcat" has emerged as a leading carcass sire of the breed, and he was named a trait leader for marbling, tenderness, retail product, and fat thickness. Both of these bulls are former International Champion sires who are proving that our bulls who excel in the showring are now excelling in the pasture by passing on traits to their offspring that improve performance and carcass merit.

First Calves by Mr. V8 380/6 Are Outstanding
When we began breeding Mr. V8 380/6 in early 2008, he was still a young bull in the V8 Ranch showstring. We felt so strongly about the genetic influence this bull would have in our herd that we began breeding him both naturally and AI on the ranch to many of our top females. His first calf crop, born in the fall 2008, is now debuting across showrings and pastures throughout the south. We are overwhelmed with the results of this bull! Just as we suspected, he is siring the calves that we feel will be "ahead of the curve" for the direction the breed is going. Pictured here is his first daughter to be shown, Miss V8 99/7, the 2009 National Calf Champion Female. We love her performance, muscling and huge bone, yet she still carries that V8 style and dark pigmentation we all love. Contact us for semen on this breed-changing sire!

V8 Animals Continue to Top ABBA Register of Renown

+WR Mr. Suva 203 "Suva"
We purchased an interest in Suva in 1979, a few months before
he won the 1980 Houston show. When he entered the Register of Renown, he debuted at the 3rd spot, the highest ranking of any
bull to first enter the Register of Renown. Through the years he continued to sire winners, and eventually moved to the #1 spot, a position he still holds today.

+Mr. V8 202/3
The breed's legendary 3-time national and 2-time international champion bull. No other bull in the history of the breed has accomplished this feat. 202 went on to be syndicated
throughout the world, and sired many popular herd bulls
including Mr. V8 666/3 for us and JDH Madison de Manso 737
for J.D. Hudgins. He sired numerous champions worldwide and several International Champion Get-of-Sire winners. He
currently ranks as the #3 bull in the register of renown.

+MN Mr. Red Mayro 257/2
The #4 bull in the Register of Renown, and the highest ranking Red Brahman bull in the Register of Renown. We purchased this bull from the Mayronne family of Louisiana and he made a tremendous impact on the Brahman breed and many other American breeds who were developing breeding-up programs at that time including Simbrah, Red Brangus, and Braler.
+Miss V8 617/2
#1 Cow in the ABBA Register of Renown - This prolific donor was a Reserve National Champion twice herself and is one of the all-time greats of the V8 Ranch. Her mating with +Mr. V8 202/3 produced the legends Mr. V8 666/3, Miss V8 666/3 and Miss V8 725/3 "Amber."
960 Calves Making a Big Splash!
With his first few calf crops now competing in the showring, the Mr. V8 960/5 calves are making quite a good performance in both the United States and in Panama for owner Ganadera Karla Mary. In the United States, two of his daughters have been very successful this spring. Miss V8 858/6 is one of the leading females on the V8 Showstring and was a Division Champion at the 2008 National Show and 2009 International Show. She was recently chosen as 2009 Reserve International Champion Female at Houston this year. Miss V8 39/7 is another popular 960 daughter, who is owned by junior exhibitor Tori Waddle. This female just started showing in spring 2009, and started off her first show with a bang by being selected as the Reserve Grand Champion Female at the 2009 Fort Worth Junior Show under judge Mitch Thomas. At the Houston Junior Show, she was chosen as the easy class winner of class 1 and went on to be the Grand Champion Female under judge Dr. Jason Rowntree.

Sloan Williams Inducted into Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame

Sloan Williams was inducted into the Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame on on March 28 in Belton, Texas. Williams was selected for his contributions as a stock contractor.

Sloan first got into the rodeo business through a partnership with the order buyers Beken Brothers of Weimar. At one time, he and Edgar Beken owned more than 300 bucking bulls. Sloan had some of the rankest bulls in the rodeo business, including seven bulls that were un-ridden. His most famous bull, V61, was un-ridden for four years.

In the 1960s and ‘70s, Sloan was known as one of the top dealers in providing rank bucking stock. He won the I.R.A. Saddle Bronc of the Year Award four consecutive years (1967 to 1970) with his famous horses #50 Redwood (1967), #121 Ozark Red (1968), #33 Surprise Package (1969), and #42 Dobie (1970). He also won Bareback Horse of the Year in 1967 with #111 County Fair and in 1969 with #66 Yammi Yogi.

During his twelve years in business, Sloan sold or leased stock to rodeo producers across the United States including Loretta Lynn, Beutler Brothers, Harry Knight, Elra Beutler & Son, Neal Gay, Swanny Kerby, Bob Barnes, Cotton Rosser, Harry Vold, Bruce Lehrke, and many more. He also hosted an indoor rodeo in Simonton, Texas every Saturday night for six years.

In 1971, Williams sold his rodeo company and purchased V8 Ranch. Through the years, Sloan enjoyed occasionally filling in for his friend and former business partner, Mike Cervi, during the first few performances of the Houston rodeo while Mike wrapped up in San Antonio. He also helped Mike out by being the arena director at San Angelo, Omaha and Albuquerque rodeos.

We would like to thank the Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame for bestowing this award on Sloan, and especially Ms. Ronna Huckaby for her hospitality and assistance during the weekend. Sloan's guests for the event were Mollie Williams, Richard and Flossy Forgason, Lana Jo and Bill Stanley, Ann Mattison, and Jan Powell.
