Some bulls win titles. Others earn them. Mr. V8 368/9 “Magic Man” is V8 Ranch’s 2026 Bull of the Year. And if you’ve followed his journey at all, you already know why this moment has been a long time coming.
The Bull of the Year designation has been awarded annually since 2016, recognizing a sire whose genetics, character, and potential we believe will shape the breed’s future. Each year, the bar is high. So high, in fact, that this year we had three bulls worthy of the title.
We were genuinely torn. But ultimately, one stood above the rest.
Magic Man’s story is one of triumph, injury, and the hard decisions that come with managing a bull of his caliber. It’s also a story of opportunity—a moment to set the record straight about his journey and his future as a breed-changing sire.
Magic Man: The Bull Who Belonged to Everyone
Around the ranch, we always say Magic Man has never really just been ours. Born in January 2023, he went viral before he had a name — an amateur cellphone video of him bucking and running as a calf flooded comment sections worldwide, prompting thousands of suggested names.
When “Magic Man” surfaced, it stuck instantly. That kind of connection between a bull and the broader Brahman community is rare. We’ve never seen anything quite like it.
His pedigree is multiple generations of excellence in the making. Sired by +Mr. V8 380/6 “The Machine”—the #1 Bull in the ABBA Register of Renown—and out of the Miss V8 906/2 cow family, Magic Man is the product of a bloodline Jim Williams began building in 1980 with a single cow purchased from the United States Sugar Corporation. Eighty years of selecting for eye appeal, good disposition, show appeal, and commercial acceptability led to this bull. Dark steel-gray pigment. Heavy bone. Three-dimensional muscle. Clean sheath. A low birthweight of 70 pounds paired with a heavy weaning weight. But mostly – the V8 style at its purest.
But to truly understand Magic Man, you have to go back to the beginning…
Show Ring Dreams
As you can imagine, we were beyond excited with the prospect of getting Magic Man into the show ring. What you may not know is that Houston 2024 was not his first show.
It was the 2023 Sugar Classic in Louisiana. He was our VIP—a bull that represented the best of our breeding program and the future of the Brahman breed. We’d had him at the show barn with his recip mother for months, and it was finally time for his first trip away from the ranch.

Humble Beginnings
Magic Man as a young calf with his recipient mother, marking the start of his extraordinary journey.

Show Barn Days
Jeff showing Magic Man off at the showbarn, standing downhill and still looking sharp.
When V8 Herdsman, Jeff Richard, arrived at the fairgrounds and went to unload the cattle, he opened the trailer, and something wasn’t right. Magic Man was lying down. For a moment, Jeff thought the bull was just resting after the trip, but when he tried to get him up, Magic Man struggled to stand.
That’s when Dad’s phone rang. “Chief, we’ve got a problem with the little bull,” Jeff said, his voice heavy with nerves. It was a tone we hadn’t heard from him often. He couldn’t put his finger on it, he said, but the bull wasn’t walking right.

Magic Man, standing out even at an early age, captured hearts with his promising presence.

First Show: Sugar Classic 2023
Despite an unexpected setback, Magic Man showcased his resilience and potential.
We still don’t know exactly what had happened—maybe he slipped in the trailer, or maybe one of the other cattle stepped on him—but our little superstar was hurt. The only answer was to not show Magic Man and bring him home.
Once back home, we called in the best vets to evaluate Magic Man. They examined him thoroughly and gave us their diagnosis: something had happened, but their best assessment was that were no permanent issues. “Just give him time,” they said. It was a good report, and we held onto it. Over the next weeks and months, we monitored him closely, and slowly but surely, he improved.
Early 2024: The Internet Names Magic Man
It wasn’t long after that Magic Man became a viral sensation. We shared a cell phone video of him on Instagram and Facebook, inviting our followers to suggest a name for the bull. The response was staggering, with thousands of suggestions pouring in.

Magic Man Steps Into the Spotlight
Waiting for his first official photo—already carrying himself with the calm confidence that would soon capture the attention of thousands.

Magic Man, my friend
When someone suggested “Magic Man,” it immediately felt right. The name captured his charisma, presence, and the mystique of a bull who already felt larger than life. More than just a name, it symbolized how deeply he had connected with people. Magic Man wasn’t just our bull anymore—he had become everyone’s bull.
By March 2024, Magic Man’s injury was a distant memory, and we were ready to debut him at Houston. Magic Man’s presence at the International Brahman Show was electric, with breeders and spectators alike gathering to see him in person. His heavy musculature, dark steel-gray pigment, and charismatic presence turned heads everywhere he went. The applause and admiration he received in the ring were unforgettable. Houston was everything we had hoped it would be.
Fall 2024: A Different Timeline for Magic Man
From spring to fall, Magic Man continued to exceed all expectations. The inquiries rolled in. Every visitor to the ranch wanted to see him. His name was on everyone’s lips, and his reputation as a future powerhouse in the breed only grew stronger. Since his debut at Houston, we’ve been bombarded with emails asking when we’d be offering his Brahman semen for sale.
But amid all the excitement, we faced a tough decision:
Do we follow the traditional timeline of prioritizing a bull’s show career over semen collection, or do we do something different and end Magic Man’s show career early?
The feelings behind this decision were rooted in a hard lesson we learned with Mr. V8 891/8 “Pathfinder,” another bull who left an extraordinary mark on our program. In his quest to win the Show Bull of the Year, Pathfinder’s semen collection was limited to a few short sessions before his untimely death at just three years old. He never had the opportunity to go to a collection facility for an extended stay.
Pathfinder’s sudden death shocked our family and the entire Brahman world. No one could have predicted it, but his loss underscored the delicate balance of managing a show bull’s career while ensuring his long-term legacy as a sire. Today, his calves are phenomenal, leaving a legacy we’re proud of—but one we cannot share widely due to the limited availability of his semen.
After much thought and consideration, we made the decision to retire Magic Man early. His future as a sire was more important to us than continuing his show career. Retiring Magic Man early wasn’t just a practical decision; it was one made out of love and respect for what he represents to our family and the breed. His potential to impact the breed far outweighed any ribbons he might win in the ring. Our team was fully committed to the plan, focusing on collecting semen and offering it to the public.
But even with this plan in place, we couldn’t resist the chance to show him at the National Brahman Show and the World Brahman Congress that fall. Wouldn’t it be great if we could retire him as a National Champion or World Brahman Congress Champion Bull? Maybe we were being greedy.
We dreamed of standing behind Magic Man at the backdrop one last time, celebrating a shared moment of pride and achievement. It felt it could be the perfect ending to his show career—a storybook conclusion for a bull who had captured so many hearts.
November 2024: The National Show
The National Show and World Congress would be Magic Man’s last trip. We were excited to show the world Magic Man one last time. But sometime during the National Show, the worst-case scenario happened – it appeared he had aggravated his old injury on the trip. At first, it didn’t seem very noticeable—just slight, we thought. We made the decision to show him anyway, a choice rooted in both pride and love for this incredible bull.
As we waited in the make-up ring, my nerves were through the roof. I hadn’t seen him walk myself, so I was cautiously optimistic.
But as I watched Dad showing Magic Man in the ring, it became clear the bull wasn’t walking well. He was hurting. My heart sank. I wanted to believe he could push through—that somehow, things would be okay. But as he moved around the ring, there was no denying it: Magic Man wasn’t right.
What I saw reminded me of his old calfhood injury, but it was much more exaggerated. I watched as Dad and Magic Man walked around the ring together—Magic Man’s gait uneven, Dad’s own walk not what it used to be. The parallel struck me: Dad had knee surgery years ago, and although every X-ray and MRI says he’s orthopedically cured, he’ll tell you, “Some days, it just hurts.”
It all reminded me of a scene in Seabiscuit that I’ve always loved. After Seabiscuit injured his leg during a race, they brought him home with his leg bandaged. Coincidentally, his rider, Red Pollard, had a bum leg at the same time. In the movie, Red drops his crutches and hobbles toward Seabiscuit. The two connect in that moment—a shared pain, a bond of respect and love. That’s exactly how I felt watching Dad and Magic Man in the ring—a connection between them born out of trust, resilience, and even shared hurt.
After Magic Man won his class, I rushed over to meet Dad as he came out of the show ring. As I walked beside Dad and Magic Man, Dad was happy. Dad loves Magic Man. Even back in October, when we were taking Magic Man’s photos, Dad was there, standing nearby, snapping his own pictures and videos on his cell phone with a grin on his face. “He looks like a million bucks,” he said, beaming with pride. Nobody believes in Magic Man like our family.
Someone snapped a photo of us walking together, and we looked happy and smiling. But the truth is, Dad turned to me and said, “He looked good out there, didn’t he?” I had to tell him, “No, he’s walking very strangely.”

The Moment We Knew

A Champion’s Final Ring
Dad and Magic Man in the National Show ring—two partners moving forward together, bound by years of trust, pride, and quiet understanding.
It was a terrible moment of realization: our pride and hubris had put our beloved Magic Man in the position to show everyone his worst side. We are not perfect. We make mistakes. But haven’t we all loved one of our animals so much that we didn’t want to accept the reality? Guilty as charged.
Magic Man won his class and the Reserve Division Champion title. In some ways, I almost wished he hadn’t won anything in division—just so he could return to the stalls and lie down, where he could rest. Instead, he had to remain standing at the make-up ring, waiting for the Grand Champion drive.
As we waited, I stayed by Magic Man’s side, my friend. Magic Man has been special from the moment he was born. Pampered and protected, first by Frank and Scott, our cowmen in the pasture, and later by Fernando and Jeff at the show barn, his life has been one of constant care and devotion. He’s always been surrounded by love—his entire existence a testament to how deeply cherished he is.
Magic Man loves his people—I truly believe that. When he’s around us, his eyes soften, and I can see him relax, as though the sound of my voice reassures him. As we stood there together, I lavished him with the scratches and attention he’s so accustomed to, telling him quietly, “You’ve done everything we’ve asked of you. After this, we’ll go back home, and you can live out the rest of your life.”
My throat tightened as I spoke, a lump of guilt and emotion forming. And then, oddly, I felt a wave of embarrassment. It’s strange to admit, because I truly believe Magic Man, even with his injury, is perhaps the best V8 bull we’ve ever raised. But, in that moment, standing there because of his performance at a cattle show, I felt embarrassed. Embarrassed that I had asked him to prove himself when he didn’t need to. Embarrassed that I had let the expectations of the show ring outweigh his true value, even for a moment.
From Show Barn to Collection Facility — Magic Man’s Road to This Moment
What happened at the National Show is not a reflection of Magic Man’s structural soundness or the traits he will pass on to his progeny. This was an injury—nothing more. It’s no different from Dad’s knee problems from college football — they won’t be passed down to me. Magic Man is sound, and his genetics are among the most impressive we’ve ever seen.
A month after the show, Magic Man appeared completely recovered, moving with the same ease and grace as before.
But we know he carries an old injury that can be aggravated, and we won’t take that risk again. His show career is over, but his legacy is just beginning. The future of Magic Man is very bright, but it won’t be under the spotlight of a show ring anymore. And that’s just fine.
Today, Magic Man is the star of the collection facility, stepping confidently into his new role as a breed-changing sire. The demand for his genetics has never been higher, and we are honored to share his incredible potential with breeders around the world.
Why do we share all this? Because Magic Man has never just belonged to us. His story, his challenges, and his triumphs are part of what make him extraordinary. And now, we eagerly look forward to seeing his legacy grow—not in the show ring, but in the calves that will carry his name, prove his worth, and remind us why we believed in him from the very start.
